Two Weeks Left of Summer Left! | from Blue Bells and Cockle ShellsLast month, I published a list of 30 Cheap and Free Things to Do With Kids During the Summer and I wanted to follow up with what things have been a particular hit for us this summer, plus I just learned about one new deal that I am still learning about, so it is at the bottom of this post. It has been so nice to use our new LG Grace LTE and the $49.88 TRULY Unlimited Talk, Text, & Data◊ from Walmart Family Mobile, Powered by T-Mobile, to be able to register for all these wonderful programs, look up where everything is, look up start times, and more. We have had awesome reception, so I have been able to get so much done on the phone while Sola is playing at the park and so forth. Plus, having no contract or activation fees is a major stress-relief. And finally, we’re loving getting a free VUDU** movie rental credit valued at $7.00 every time we renew our service!

Two Weeks Left to Do Cheap and Free Things With Kids This Summer! | from Blue Bells and Cockle ShellsKids Skate Free

The one program that we did sign up for and have really, really enjoyed this summer is KidsSkateFree. We paid the $4 administrative fee and have been using our two free passes/week since. Sola has become so much better of a skater! She goes skating for two-three hours at a time and let me tell you, she sleeps well after one of those skating sessions! We also got several friends to sign up and have been bringing them with us, so it has been so much fun for her. She got even more excited about skating after we read the book, Roller Girl and currently plans to try out for roller derby next summer!

Hooray for Libraries!

And of course, we got the Roller Girl book from the library, which is the other great free resource we have been using this summer. We even signed up for a Seattle Library card. We live outside of Seattle, but our library has a reciprocal relationship with Seattle Library. Let me tell you, finding a branch of the Seattle Library was such a pain! The traffic in Seattle is such that one wrong turn can add 30 minutes to your commute by the time you get turned around again. So I was really frustrated when we got to the branch I had picked out and learned it was closed! It never occurred me to check if it was open in the middle of the day on a weekday, but this branch had very limited hours. Fortunately, I was able to use the GPS on my LG Grace LTE to reroute us to another library branch. Now that I have our library cards there, however, I can print out free passes to local museums through the library from the comfort of home and it saves a bundle!

You Don’t Want to Get Lost at the Zoo After It Closes

Two Weeks Left of Summer Left! | from Blue Bells and Cockle Shells
One place that the library does not have free passes to is our local zoo. So I signed up for a membership, which really does save money if you go there very often. One thing I love about our zoo is the interactive map they have. Not only does it help to save trees by not needing printed maps every time we go there, but it is so much easier to navigate with a map that shows you where you are. I know people, who shall remain nameless :-), who have gotten lost in our zoo after closing and it was a bit scary for them. I asked them why they didn’t use the GPS map of the zoo and they didn’t even know there was one, so I don’t know why the zoo doesn’t do a better job of making sure people know about the app.

Beaches

TTwo Weeks Left of Summer Left! | from Blue Bells and Cockle ShellsAnother freebie that has been lots of fun for us this summer has been finding new beaches. I don’t know why some beaches get swamped with people such that there is no parking and other beautiful beaches have hardly any visitors. Anyway, we’ve been driving from beach to beach, using the GPS to direct us, and found some pretty beaches that were “hidden gems”. Sola hates crowds and I hate going anywhere if I have to fight for a parking spot, so it was very nice to find that not all beaches were crazy crowded. Two Weeks Left of Summer Left! | from Blue Bells and Cockle Shells

Geocaching

We also used our GPS to geocache, which is 100% free and is a great excuse to get outside and stay active. Sola still is not super excited about geocaching, but all her friends love to go with us and she loves doing anything with her friends.

Movie Pass

I also wanted to tell you about something new that we learned about since I posted my original post, MoviePass! MoviePass is an awesome way to enjoy the movies with your kids. You just pay $9.95/month/person and can see one movie per day at any major theatre! Obviously, I am not advising that you take your kids to see a movie every single day, but for us, $9.95 is cheaper than even matinee or children’s tickets around here, so if we see just one movie a month, the pass pays for itself. During the summer, however, we have been going to festivals, so have been seeing more than one movie/month. One big disclaimer I have here is this pricing for MoviePass is new and we just signed up and haven’t gotten to use it yet. So I know how it is supposed to work, but can’t verify that there are no glitches. Just signing up was a bit iffy as the site has been overwhelmed since they lowered their price.
